William F. Ludwig was the first bass drum pedal in 1909. This paved the way for the modern drumset. The bass pedal is made of a "base plate" that is pressed to a chain, belt or metal pull down mechanism, which then causes a "float" towards the drumhead. The double bass pedal lets the drummer for more beats dealing with two beaters which the powerful sound of the drum set.
The sound quality is always the main concern of every musician. To achieve a clear drum beat is the goal of getting a double bass pedal. This not only makes the knocking sound fuller, but better. The drum set with double bass pedal is always a better which only a single bass drum pedal.
Classes of bass pedals:
1. Belt drive - The drive belt is composed of four interchangeable cams. Have adjustable belt drives, more traction and adjustable toe clips.
2. Dual-cam - dual cam provide strong and permanent stairs. There are separate adjustments for pedal height, beater angle and spring tension. These types of pedals have a stabilizer for quick release and Velcro. The floats come with anti-slip surfaces and two memory slots.
3. Direct drive - These pedals provide a rapid response and seamless stairs. Have the same features as the dual cam.
Buying Tips when buying bass pedals:
1. Choose pedal belts made of plastic anchored with steel cables for stretch resistance and durability.
2. Choose one with adjustable belt or chain drives to easily change the angle of the step. This is important for comfort while playing.
3. For maximum traction, choose one with rubber discs or dots on the foot pedal to prevent slipping.
