Along with the Fender Stratocaster, the Gibson Les Paul is synonymous with rock & roll and blues guitar. Although the shape and the thick, fat sound remained constant throughout the years, details of pick-up selection of neck motion, is amended to reflect Gibson's continuing desire to innovate.
In 2008 Gibson introduced a Gibson Les Paul Standard, which more than a fair share of the changes included some welcome and some not. Let's take a look at these revisions.
Here is a list of Gibson made the changes. The new Les Paul Standard now includes Strap Locks (Dunlop), Chambered body, Grover locking tuners, TonePros bridge / tailpiece, Neut Rick output, and Place through a setup. If you're familiar with these guitars, you will immediately notice the lighter weight, because the Chambered body.
We do not know any defect in tone because of the Chambered body, and played acoustically, the Les Paul Standard had a well-balanced, deep tone. If you ever gigged with a Les Paul for a long period, you will Price lighter weight.
Since I usually substitute tune-o-matic style bridge with TonePros, the custom bridge and tailpiece are a welcome addition, as the Place setup, resulting in a solid playing and sounding guitar right out of the box.
We had to make a small truss rod adjustment, but an instrument that was sent halfway across the country, which is normal procedure. For the record though this guitar ready for action straight out of the box. Not bad.
The finish on the revised standard is so beautiful as always. We went on a Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish that was just a beautiful flame. We found no defects in either workmanship or fit, and the fret dressing and setup is as good as we ever seen a production tool. Gibson also chose to exclude the pickguard of this model, although you can easily install if you miss. The pick guard is included however.
We were intrigued when we found that Gibson built this series with an asymmetric neck profile, but we say we are glad they did. The profile sport a thicker bass side and a thinner treble side.
Think of it as one of the best 50's and 60's profile neck in a design. The molding plant and equipment were the best we had ever seen an out-of-the-box Gibson.
It is difficult for us to think of a Les Paul without thinking of the sound of a Les Paul cranked-up through a Marshall, so we walked by the Gibson renewed a Marshall JCM800 half stack. We found what we found, but you need to know the Chambered body gives the guitar a little ES-335 sound when bent. Think old Clapton.
The Burstbucker pickups seemed a nice fit because they are aggressive and dark by nature. There are certainly some final Les Paul tones to be found here, although the Chambered body / Burstbucker combination has its own unique flavor. To each his own. We liked them.
We must say however that a few things that we simply do not care. Gibson chose Neutrik locking jacks include, for example. Some individuals love them, but we are not fans. However, the Neutrik connectors superior quality, so we appreciate that at least.
The same applies to the PCB mounted volume and tone pots. In fact, all pots, the pickups, the selector switch, and the connection of all connected to one of the main PCB board via pluggable connectors. Although cool in a way, it can also seriously hamper a pot or exchange switch pickups. We were left rubbing our heads on this.
Yet these objections are minor. Overall, the new Gibson Les Paul Standard is a great guitar in many ways, and we sense Here the spirit of the classic Les Pauls. Gibson is also a traditional Les Paul "that could appeal to more conservative people who want a Les Paul. Obviously, Gibson has something for everyone in their Les Paul series.
